Hi all!

I know how to add a permanent subtitle to an *.avi movie. There are many applications that do this. I use AutoGK most of the time for all my XviD/DivX processing. When adding a subtitle with eastern-european characters I noticed that some characters are correctly and some are wrongly displayed. For example I see characters 'æ'and 'ð' instead of 'č' and 'đ'. This does not only happen with AutoGK but with "Avi ReComp" and some other tools. I could not get proper character set not even when used Windows Media Player and explicitly set that subtitles are for Serbian language!? Everything fails, except VirtulDub which seems to achieve what I want. VirtualDub has a subtitler filter that can add titles. End result is satisfactory in terms of correctnes of special characters. But when working with VirtualDub I have another problem. It does not create exactly correct file size, like AutoGK does (and is very good at it). No matter how hard I play with XviD settings (single or 2-pass) it creates file bigger than 700MB despite the fact I selected target size to be 700MB even.

Now when you know my problem, can you tell me how to:
- either get all characters correctly with AutoGK (if possible)
- or tell me how to create a correct file size with VirtualDub. I followed all directions given at this webpage: http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/xvid_setup.html. Still it gives me ~100MB bigger file than wanted. The same happens if I use bitrate to control file size!?

Please help!

You might want to try converting to unicode.

Thanks to a quick reply I found what was causing a problem. It turns out that every subtitle file I had to touch with SubtitleWorkshop. In its output settings it was saving subtitle with Western characterset and not with Central European characterset. After I changed to correct characterset everything works well. To get an idea what I am talking about see a screenshot attached.
