i just bought it but neither dvd identifier or dvd decrypter recognizes them.when my drive is select in indentfier it only has dvd+r and dvd+rw selected and the rest is grey.does this mean my drive doesnt read dvd -r?

Your drive supports both formats so maybe a firmware update will help if it's not up to date. The latest for your drive is A106 .
I haven't come across any made in Malaysia Sony's so I'm not sure if Sony or someone makes them.
Have you tried burning any?

no it would work on mine but the one im using is a hp dvd writer 400c and turns out it only reads and writes dvd+r and dvd+rw and thats pretty stupid oh well cant wait to try em on my lg .thanks anyway.yea made in malaysia :S

Yeah the hp 400c is an older drive only supporting +R media.
The latest firmware is KH27 but this won't enable to read -R media.
