Hi, Very new to dvd burning...using mostly for video scrapbooking/photos....
Which burner should I purchase for my Dell Dimension 4600 PC? inexpensive model preferred?

HI!
Ok purchased a Pioneer DVR 1810 Internal DVD/CD writer....took out my CD burner and installed new equip....fine no prob...Now my computer is not recognizing the "New Hardware", talked to DELL they can't help because it is not "their" product! Talked to Pioneer who ref me to Dell...called the "geek Squad" who wants $159 to come and install it at my home!! UGH!! something so simple is turning into a nightmare!!
Any installation ideas? is there something I should be doing to uninstall the old Cd burner?

Wow $159 for 5 minutes of work - way too much.

Good ole Dell too :)

Dell's is one of the only manufacturers that prefer cable select on the jumper pins on the drive. So open the pc case back up (turn off the power) - take out the new Pioneer and on the back change the jumper pin to cable select.
Here's a mini guide - link.

Make sure you have the power connector connected too - it's usually a white connector.

Now put it back together, turn the pc back on and windows should recognize the new hardware an install - only takes a minute or two.

THANKS!!! should have known you could help! OK followed all your instructions....
BUT here is the deal the back of mine looks like the pic in the photo only it has 4 rowsof pins in that section not 3 and the little plastic cover is on the last 2 pins on the right...should I move it to 3rd row?
Also there isn't anything that actually plugs into this section correct? the only thing I have connecting to the pc is the thick ribbon cord w/many pins and the power connector to the right of that....like the photo??

HI!! changed the cap to the end of the row of pins...to make it cable select...and it works!!!!!!!!! I just burned my test dvd!! YEAH!!
so just tell me what that little plastic thing actually does? if its not even connected to anything?? what is it doing to the pins?
Who would of thought!

Yep you want it on the 3rd row (had to look this up to find out about the extra jumpers)
Here's a doc from Pioneer on this drive - link.

Yes just need the ide and power connected. Make sure the ide cable is set tight too on the drive itself on the motherboard (just follow the cable to the slot on the motherboard).
Let me know how it goes.

edit to add: Glad that did the trick!! Now for for that pin does I really don't know - actually never thought about it tell you asked - the most I know is it needs to match the connection on the ide cable or in the case of Dell's set to cable select :)
