Hi, I have a LITE-ON DVD+RW LDW-401S. It doesnt read any disk at all. I have tried installing new drivers, but still no luck. When i put a Cd/Dvd in the drive, the light flashes for a few seconds, makes a scraching noise then stops. When i go on device manager to see if there is any problem, it says 'the device is working properly' Can anyone help me please

Hi obzdadon
Sounds like the drive may be on it last legs - it a bit old in burner years. The latest firmware for it is ESOM.
If you don't have the latest try updating it.

You can also try uninstalling the drive in device manager and see if that helps. Right click on my computer>properties>hardware tab>device manager. Click the + next to dvd/cd drives then right and pick uninstall on the LiteOn. Reboot and let windows do it's thing and reinstall.

You can also try cleaning the lens with either some canned air or a dvd lens cleaner.

hey, ive done everything you told me apart from the canned air thing. It still doesnt work. When i re installed it, it says new harware found, then it says cd-rom drive, (mines a dvd-rw. If you install other things like mp3 players, its meant to say the harware is working properly but on mine the icon from the system tray just vanishes. I had the same problem with another drive on the same computer. i thought it would be that you'd need to download a driver so i did but there was no luck. Is there anything else i should do?

When you uninstalled it then rebooted you'll only see the found new hardware for like a minute if that. The driver that it uses is a Windows one that already on your pc so your ok there.

You can try cleaning the lens. Or open the pc case (turn the power off 1st) and switching places on the ide cable - like master to slave. Change the jumper on the back of the drive too to reflect which connector on the ide cable it's on. Like if you change it to the master - set the jumper pin to master. If this is a Dell pc though they prefer the jumper setting of cable select.

It may just be time to get a new one though.
