Here's a brain-teaser... I have been backing up my DVDs successfully with DVDshink, a toshiba satellite m115 s3154, and nero 6.6.1.4. But when I write to a dual-layer disc it will play for a day or two and then I get the "bad disc" message from my dvd player. Even my dvd-rom on my laptop will not recognize it. Weird huh? I even switched out the dvd recorder on my laptop but it does the same thing. How can it work for a day and then suddenly decide not to be readable when the recorded info is unchangable? No big deal because I can make backups to DL discs on my desktop. Sometimes the menus are screwy but I can work around them. Thanks for any info or best guesses.

Sounds like a media problem to me.

What brand(s) of DL media are you using? How are you storing the burned discs?

How old is your burner? It's also possible that the laser in the burner isn't as strong as it should be and isn't getting a complete reaction with the dye layers.

FYI, the dye in the discs will break down due to UV radiation and heat.

I'm using Memorex 2.4x DVD+R DL. I store them in a paper pouches in a metal box but I don't think this is the problem because dl discs burned on my desktop are stored the same way and seem to always play. I swapped out the dvd burner from another laptop and got the same result. I think it has to be something with nero or the laptop itself because that's the only constant.

Are you burning with your laptop plugged into the ac? Others have said that their laptops won't burn unless it is plugged in, but you never know.

Kind of sounds like your burner isn't getting full power to its laser or a media issue (not necessarily a problem). And even the burner used to burn it no longer recognizes it?

Can you do a CD/DVD Speed scan on the disks?

Personally, I don't use Memorex anymore. Found out they aren't the quality media they purport to be.

I'd try a different brand of DL disks to rule out the media being the cause. Track down a Verbatim DL and give it a try, they're kind of expensive but they are currently the best.
