Archos AV380 not recognized

Hi

I'm wondering if anyone knows the answer for this problem -- my Archos AV380 was working fine, then suddenly - the computer doesn't recognize it anymore and the screen on the device is colored bars. I have stuff on the hard drive and don't want to send it for repair because they will reformat it first and erase my data.

Any suggestions appreciated.
