I have a vaio pcg-grt915m, the compound between the cpu and the heatsink is a solid paste, so the cpu is stuck to the heatsink, is it possible to some how detach the cpu from the heatsink?? It stuck on quite hard, btw, the laptop has a p4 478 cpu inside it, it has the metal block on the cpu that covers the die, unlike amd cpu's that are not covered.

i think you could maybe yank it off. Just take the whole cpu out...

if its stuck on real real tight, then possibly.

Why do you want to take it off anyway? You cant add aftermarket cooling to a laptop.

I want to install the 478 cpu in a desktop, its a 100% standard p4 desktop processor, I dont want it installed in a desktop permanently, just for a short period of time to test a motherboard.

Try twisting it a bit.

You can separate it, but you won't be able to use either the CPU or the heatsink again because you can't then remove the thermal epoxy.
