Have a fat PS2, Swap Magic Plus Coder (v3.6) Maxwell CDs (silver bottomed)
Bought Swap Magic about 2 weeks ago and have not been able to use it even once.
I looked long and hard through just about every swap magic thread and "burning" thread I could find to make sure I did it right and didn't have to ask for help. Lo and behold, I must ask for help.
Downloaded Neo Contra as a rar file. Used winrar to extract the MDS and MDF. Used Alcohol 120 since I have heard it is used to burn the CD PS2 games (And DVD Decrypter for DVD's...Among other well talked of progs)
Using Alcohol 120 I clicked image Burning Wizard, selected my file (I burned the MDS first then when it didn't work I tried the MDF) Selected my write speed at 10X, selected data type as PS2 and clicked start. Both burned just fine.
Placed swap magic CD in PS2, it did its thing, used the swap card to open it, put my import in the console, closed it.
Now I'm not sure if this is where I'm going wrong. On the first screen I choose Normal. 2nd screen I choose default. My screen goes black, then it shows a grey screen with the memory card and says "Reading Disc" THEN the screen turns black and red and states that I'm not using a PS2 formatted disc.
As far as I can tell I've done everything right. Are they junk discs? I do believe that I read on here that Maxwell was a trusted brand for imported and backed up PS2 games.
Any ideas/suggestions?
Thanks.

Hmm... try burning it at a slower speed if possible. It sounds like you're doing everything correctly :)

Glad to know I'm doing it right. :)
I went to re burn at a slower speed, and (perhaps I don't know how to use Alcohol 120 right) but when I get to select the write speed it has Maximum >>24X >>20X >> 16X >>10X
I may try it at maximum speed just to see, but if not, I almost feel like I wasted all that money on swap magic. :(

I don't know if this will work, but you could try using DVDLoader or CDLoader before swapping in your backup. If those don't work, there is also ZoneLoader.
CD/DVD/ZoneLoader are burned like PS2 games. CDLoader and DVDLoader can be downloaded here:
http://www.sksapps.com/index.php?page=swapmagic.html
I'm not sure where to find ZoneLoader, but I'll look around.

Thanks! I found Zoneloader, actually on the same site that you posted above.
I have Maxwell brand DVD as well, however they aren't silver bottomed, they are purple. Do you think that will make a difference?
Thanks for all your help, I'm going to try ZoneLoader now.

No prob :)
And I don't think the color makes a difference, Maxell's are a good brand.
Oh yeah lol I forgot, blank DVDs are purple bottomed, and original stamped DVDs are silver, so no it won't make a difference :)

I have swap magic, and I got errors before, like invalid ps2 disc, but I think thats because I burnt it wrong, or something, I forget.
You have a mds and a md5 file right? Not an iso? Then yes, you would have to use dvd decrypter to burn that. I always used nero since everything I have done in the past was .iso.
Burn discs at half of rated max speed. If 16x, burn at 8x.
I have burnt one game once at 16x just as a test on dvd-r media, and it worked out fine so I dunno. I never did it again, lol.

I have Ritek 8X DVDs, burned it at half the speed and it was very choppy, so that method doesn't work all the time :)

Alrighty, well I guess my money spent on Swap Magic was all in vain.
I tried the Zoneloader CD (burned the iso on a CD using Alcohol 120. Burned in just over a minute at 10X) and the screen would turn black and thats it.
I even tried using the Swap Magic DVD to use codes for a Contra game (Original copy) and even that said the disc was not PS2 formatted.
Perhaps I'm not doing something right with swap magic?
I've made sure I close teh tray all the way. But perhaps I'm selecting the wrong things? (Normal, Special, SMBoot - PAL, Default etc)
I've tried them all but I have no idea what the difference in them all is.

There should be a DVD version of ZoneLoader, have you tried that one yet? Actually, I just found it on my hard drive if you need it.

Is the Zoneloader like Swap Magic where the CD disc is for CD burned games and DVD disc for DVD burned games?

Did you download the Contra Game off a torrent website or something if you did it might be a bad copy all togather so here what i suggest...
1. go tot he torrent website and go to your torrent file and select the comments option if there is one and look at the other user comments if the other users state that they didnt get it to work you know that it is just not you who is having the problem.
2. try going to Movie gallery or blockbuster and rent another CD game and make a copy of it and see if it works...
3. if all of the steps do not work then my friend you have a corupt PS2 system
