I am having gaming problems with my new custom computer. Whenever I play a game, for example Battlefield 2 or F.E.A.R., my computer "skips" and lags. It is so bad that I can't stand playing games, and that is the whole reason I built a new computer!
I have no idea what is wrong. I just installed a new 8800 gts 320mb graphics card. I did it properly (downloading the correct drivers and whatnot), and there is no sign that thats the problem.
I observed my NVIDIA monitor while playing a game, and I noticed that my disk (Hard drive) was under a lot of stress. It was running at 100%. I think this might be the problem, but I have no way of knowing for sure. My games are running totally off of my hard drive because I use cracks no CDs, so that is why I might suspect the hard drive having a problem. This hard drive is an older ATA seagate, and I just noticed on their website that vista is not listed as a supported operating system.I have Vista 64bit. However, this hard drive works well for all other things other than gaming, though for many operations I notice the drive is up to 100% again.
I noticed also my memory is at about 75-80% when I am playing a game. Is that a problem? It is 1 gig of corsair 6400.
Again, I really have no idea what could be wrong. My computer specs are below in my signature if you can spot something wrong.

I have an antec 180 case, a evga nforce 680i lt mobo, a intel core 2 duo 4300 (overclocked at 3ghz).. A zalman 9750 cpu heatsink, 3 sticks of corsair 1 gig ddr2 800, a seagate st3160023a ata 7900rpm harddrive, EVGA 8800 gts 320mb, a 600 watt ultra xfinity psu (sli ready), and a lite-on dvd-rw LH-20A1L. All run on Vista 64bit.

As I see the usual suspects lined up, it's my opinion that your RAM is most likely the problem. I have an Industrial based program that I use, and it requires 1 GIG RAM MINIMUM. Anything less, and you could watch grass grow faster. Not being a gamer myself, there could be other reasons why your system is reading data from the HDD more than your RAM with these games. Hopefully the easiest fix is to up-grade the RAM. Sit tight for other members to post.

Best thing I can suggest now is to get 2GB of RAM. Vista uses nearly 1GB on its own, so your system has no memory left for games. To be honest, gaming on Vista 64-bit should really have 4GB or more.

I was pretty sure I needed a little more ram, but I am bothered by the 100% my hard drive is getting on the NVIDIA monitor. Should I not be so worried about it? Does that not mean that's what is slowing down my games?

I had the exact same problem, and when I started to run my ram at 1000mhz with 4-4-4-12 timings this thing stopped happening. Try overclocking your RAM a bit and see what happens.

I went out to fry's today and bought 2 more gigs of ram. Let me tell you that all is fantastic now!!! It must have just been the lack of ram with Vista running and all. Now with 3 gigs, everything is amazing. FEAR and Battlefield run like a dream. I am totally satisfied with my new computer now. Finally!!!
