I used the available info to create a controller to usb cable for my xbox. I soldered all the wires and when I plug the cable in to my laptop I get an error that says the device has exceeded its power limits of the hub port and will not work. Is this a bad solder problem or is it just my crappy laptop?

That was my suspicion but I think it just won't power the controller with only 1 usb port. I have a usb enclosure for another laptop drive and it requires a "Y" cable to get it to spin up. The trouble is I want to make sure I can find another cable like it before I cannibalize it for my softmod.

First off, sodering is not required for a xbox controller to usb conversion. You need to check all your connections. USB2 has nothing to do with it. I modded my controller over 2 years ago and have used it to this day on my laptop without fail. Where did you get your instruction for this conversion from?

I know soldering is not required but i did it the way the tutorial instructed. In fact I believe it was the link from Chunkhead's Xbox tutorial here...it links to xboxscene. I could have just went out and bought the converter cable but I had the stuff here. Now... is there some magical fix you have dreamed up to fix this?

Yeah, obviously if the pc is giving an overload type error, that means wires are touching . If you want, just use a spare usb cable and just splice the wires and use some electrical tape. I know it's not very proffessional looking, but hey, who are we trying to impress here. Results are what matters.
