Hi,i have recently bought a second hdd to go in my dell 2400,i have tried it internally and externally but it has trouble with larger files.Say i want to copy a 3gb image file from the mentioned drive to my proper original hdd or burn the image it is fine but when i try it with 7.5 gb images it gets to say 50 - 54% and freezes up and usually i have to restart the pc to get it to stop whatever it was trying to do.I have scanned the drive for faults but it seems ok.Like i said i have tried EVERY combination of things to try and get this working i.. Set to master on ide cable etc. i have even tried it with a IDE - USB converter but nothing,it still has issues reading large files.I have tried doing the same actions on my original HDD and everything seems fine and burns/reads/copies correctly,i would appreciate some help on this guys as im at the point now where i dont know what else to try and im reluctant to fork out for another hdd if its compatibility issues or a sytem fault because the problem wont be solved by a lovely brand,spanking new HDD!
P.s. the hdd is an IDE Seagate "U series 9" 120gb drive,it was formatted correctly upon purchase.
Cheers.

is the new hard drive FAT32??? if so it cant take files that big (i forget the limit, but i think its under 4GBs) you need to format it to NTFS

Hi no its in ntfs format.In its properties i noticed that in unallocated sapce it has zero and i wondered wather this meant the hdd has no room left? this is not possible and would obviously point to a fault somewhere.I also noticed that the partition style was set to:
Master boot Record (mbr)not that this has any relevance just something i had not noticed before.Ive also noticed that it is particularly bad when burning a larger image from it with Nero etc. i get i/o device errors constantly.I have also installed an extra Cd rom to it internally and im not sure if this has just made things worse!
Whether there is a limit to how many ide devices i can have installed i just dont know??? If all else fails what is the best form of RELIABLE internal or external 120 - 250gb hdd with the capacity to copy,paste read and write to and from my main pc hdd with the ability to manage larger files such as 8 - 14gb?
Is this possible or am i just being greedy to expect such things.
Thanks for the words mate,very helpful.

That does not matter, that would be if there was a partition on the drive, and some other space left over where you could make another partition.

I would do a FULL format if i was you.

I think it struggled on a FULL format once and successful once but quick format ok.Do you think it must be faulty,that it should (if working properly) be able to do all that i aked earlier?
Cheers.

I have installed it internally as slave second on cable with main hdd as master at end of cable (obviously!).I can access stuff but have not tried my bigger files previously mentioned yet but one thing i notice is that the lettering for this hdd is in blue whilst all the other drives are the normal black lettering.This is obviously for a reason but i dont get it?!
If all devices are internally installed in the same manner why is the lettering on this troublesome device in blue???
Any ideas.
Cheers.

FAT32 = Maximum file size 4GB.
If it can't handle that file size in NTFS, it's probably a faulty drive. Make sure you full format it before replacing it, though.
