HELP with Subtitles..... I'm going Mad :(

Hi

I've ripped my movie ok using Smart Ripper > DVD2AVI > TMPGEnc

The movie is in English (I am English) but in certain sections of the movie it requires English subtitles and i don't understand how to add these. I've read a million posts on subtitles 'how to' but they all seem to refer to adding full subtitles through the whole movie which isn't what i want and they also say about the .srt (Subtitle file) and i can't even see these in the folder which holds my Vobs, this is what i have:
amistad AC3 T01 3_2ch 448Kbps 48KHz.wav
amistad.d2v
vts_02_0.ifo
vts_02_1.vob
vts_02_2.vob
vts_02_3.vob
vts_02_4.vob
vts_02_INFO.txt

I can rip using the above method with little or no problem but when it comes to incorparting other programms i'm pretty useless.

Please could some one help me with this as it's driving me NUTS and please could you keep your explanations 'simple' (like idiot proof)

Not clear what the ultimate goal is here.
Are you trying to make a backup copy of a DVD which has subtitles?

Converting it to AVI then to elementary streams is the wrong way to do it.

VSRip to extract the subs then VSFilter to add (them XVCD requires hard subs). Subs may either be forced or in their own stream.
