Here is some useful info first.

MSI K7N2 Delta-L motherboard
AMD Athlon 2800+ DTR 2133Mhz
Titan Vanessa L-type Cooler
Geil pc3200 memory
Antec smartpower 2.0 400 watt PSU
Maxtor HDD
Very Good Cooling overall

My AMD Athlon is meant to have 133 FSB with the multiplier at 16x.
My mobo had the unfortunate restriction of 13x in the multiplier. The only way I saw to solve this was raise the FSB as high as I felt comfortable with and that was fsb 180. The computer was solid as a rock with 180 fsb and 12x multiplier.

I have had a good setup going now for a long time and to my amasement a week ago I suddenly couldn't get my computer to start up properly. I have a MSI K7N2 Delta-L motherboard and a Antec smartpower 2.0 400 watt PSU. A couple days before that happened my PSU started producing a subtle high pitched whine. I thought nothing of as this setup was going almost 1 year strong. I have read that my PSU making this sound may not be a real problem aside from the annoying acoustics. This is sort of where the problem really begins. I cleared the bios and put the computer fsb in safe mode and figured lowering the fsb must be the solution. After that everything was ok until the next day my comp had the same problem again. So I continued to lower fsb. Once again it didn't turn on the next day. I then tried it again but this time nothing happened. I figured at that point that it must be the PSU. I found a good deal on a brand new smartpower 2.0 450watt this time. After installing I was surprised it didn't solve the issue. I decided it was time to test my cpu on an old motherboard I still had. It worked fine on there with both PSUs. I figured there was only one more option and that was buy a new motherboard. After the purchase all was well again except I still have the same PSU on the new setup. My question is can that same PSU have played a part in the death of my old motherboard? If it has then I'll need to take it out pronto. I am no longer overclocking as I figure my mild overclock of my old setup may have caused it but I can't be sure. Thanks for reading this.

Yes it can, use a decent PSU to prevent the same issue occurring.

I appreciate your reply. I understood that part though and that's why why I bought Antec in the first place. If even Antec doesn't produce a decent PSU at that price then who can you trust? In addition, how is it possible for my previous PSU to take out a mobo and then still work ok when connected to another mobo? I am in awe of the PSU issue in general.

Every manufacturer sometimes has bad units, and although Antec are quite good, some units have been problematic. If you ever doubt your power supply, replace it.
