I have discovered that labels for DVDs made of paper will cause playback errors after 2 years. I have four instances of this happening. According to Memorex, paper lables tend to shrink/expand under the heat in dvd players and thru shelf life, causing tiny warping on the very sensitive dvd media. This can cause skipping and other playback errors.

I started using the memorex dvd labels that are made of a polyester or some other material that is not supposed to change.

I may end up checking into lightscribe technology if i have problems with these labels down the road.

good luck -
eric

If I had a buck for every person I helped solve their playback issues and the culprit was sticker labels, I'd be rich!!!!!

You could get ya a printer that has the capability to print directly onto the disc, using inkjet printable media. Epson/Canon

If you're in the USA,you can locate the Epson R200/220/200/320/or 340. A lot of brick and mortar stores may still have them. The best part,I get my generic ink for under $15 per set of 6 ink carts.

There's some newer/glossier inkjet printable media now,to give a very good look on your backups. Glossy white/matte white/and my favorite-the Shiny printables.

1 thing about Lightscribe, only colors are shades of gold/bronze/brown,black. Colored LS discs are getting closer. The drive will wear out quicker as well.

Like most people here, I have been there and done that with those sticky labels. They are misrepresented when they put DVD on there.

On the bottom in small print it gives you a warning about playback. I had the EXTREME misfortune in backing up my hard drive on DVD, apply DVD label so I know what is on there, then went to put data back on hard drive and it DIDNT WORK!

Do not use for DVD at all, they will ruin your data. I had to soak each DVD in water and carefully peel off, not easy to do, and almost ruined my DVD drive when trying to playback.

Invest in an EPSON series printer for direct printing. Stay away from the new HP that does this, aweful software.

Goo Gone and WD-40 are a couple of products that'll remove sticker labels.Still an agonizing process.

After the removal, the discs should be ok after that.

Also guys this may be unrelated, but if you have a scratched disc and playback errors, Ive been using NuFinish Car polish. Rub some on with a nice cotton cloth, rub from center of disc outwards, not in circles, let sit for 2 minutes, then wipe off. It will fill in the minor scratches, hold the disc up to the lite, if you see light through a scratch then the disc is ruined.

Sharpies on sale at walgreens this week for 39 cents with coupon. The shipment didn't arrive at my local walgreens,UGGH!

Don't get those chinese made generic sharpies at odd stores or flea markets. They are junk and not waterproof. They also dry out very quickly.

Did'nt Know about The Walgreens Ad ! That's one of the wife's Favorite stores !!!!! Okay I like it too !!!! & It sounds like a Heckuva !!! Deal ! But I'm still a good Bit ahead on the sharpies though !!! . A couple of few years ago the Oldest Grandson came to visit Grabs my sharpies and a Notebook ands has at it Drawings and dooodling ! That's okay of course as long as hew keeps it confined to the paper ! He did , he's a good kid & all that !! & It keeps occupied ( I Live in a veryy rural area - He Gets bored easy) he stays for the weekend then back to MOM & DAD ! But after he leaves I can't Find my sharpies - He does'nt steal or anything so He did'nt Take them home with him ! I look without results for several days & Still No Sharpies !!! SO I say to myself Scrooge It I'll just buy some more !!!! SO I do and back in bussiness ! Now for the Punchline of the story !!! Same grandson Comes visits again Like 6months to a year later is here 5minutes and walks right in and finds the old sharpies wherever he put them that long ago!!! Ain't that somehing ?

I would just like to know which model you would reccomend? (or are they all pretty much the same?) Also, where in the world do you get all 6 ink cartriges for $15? I have looked everywhere and the cheapest I've found are closer to $6 each ($36 for all 6) and those were generics. OEMs are closer to $12 each. So please tell me where you get your ink!

Yeah...where are these 15$ ink for 6 carts? I found this but havent tried them:

http://www.rima.com/Merchant2/merchant.m...oduct_Code=2860

Also Walgreens sucks. Their stuff is overpriced because they are 'in the neighborhood' and whatever you buy there it always comes a little over the dollar, I always end up with a lot of change when I pay with bills.

Solution for sharpies:
Open up the CD/DVD you just burned in the computer. Do a print screen of the contents. Crop out everything so you have all files on file. Then print the image, cut it, and put it inside the CD/DVD case! Write with a sharpie "Disc 4 Backups" on the print of files, and then write it on the corresponding CD/DVD.

Vader: I only use generic ink from places like Supermediastore.com,rima.com,and meritline.com. I've also used generic ink from Abacus24/7.com till they upped the prices.

I couldn't tell a difference between genuine epson and generic.

By searching all 3 of those sites, you should get a very good price on generic ink..My last few batches has been G&G ink from meritline.com. It was a 14 cart set for $35 which included 2 of each of the 6 colors and 2 extra black carts. Buying these at walmart/staple's/etc,then you're talking about $160+ for 12 carts of epson ink.

Some of those sites runs specials for sets of 48 carts-meritline,which would be 8 sets. These sales have been as low as $52 and around $90 or so lately. Gotta keep an eye on those special 50% off or higher from those sites.

Staple's,best buy, office max,etc are good places to get these disc printers. Staple's tend to clear them out for newer models. Last time I checked, they only had the R-260 and that printer takes different ink carts-which the site c1c posted. $20 a set for that printer is a pretty good deal.

Maybe you can get lucky and find those older R-series models I listed earlier in the thread. I got my dad an R-220 for $50 at staples. There's mine, dad's,and 3 other people I work with that takes the same inkcarts that's compatable with the R-220. So I've been waiting for that 8 set deal for a little over a buck apiece. Probably never see it again, but there's always hope, LOL.

Thanks for all the info. It was very helpful. I have used Memorex labels on all my DVDs since I started backing them up a few years ago. I've really only had a few problems just with the ones I make for my kids. They watch them a lot and I'm sure those are the ones that are getting heated up the most. Although, my kid's DVDs tend to get pretty scratched up too. I didn't know that the labels might actually be causing a problem. So, what brand inkjet printable DVDs are you all using? I saw an ad for these new aqualock DVDs by Imation. You don't have to wait for them to dry but they are over $1 each! What is the best compromise out there for quality and price? How long do you really have to wait for the DVDs to dry after printing and how long does it take to print them? Sorry for all the questions.

I've still got a stash of Maxell full hub matte from a walmart clearance. These are the Hitachi maxells that say Made in Japan on the outer shrink wrapper. Avoid the maxell full hub inkjet printables that say Made in Taiwan on the shrink wrapper. Huge difference between the 2,even though they packaged identically in the 25 pks.

Verbatim makes a very fine full hub inkjet printable as well as Taiyo Yuden. Anything other than those 3 brands,I'd avoid.

There's also shiny inkjet printable which cost more. I've got a few of them left as well, but they're reg hubs. Reg hubs, less printable surface. Full hub, more printable surface as it will print right up to the inner hub-(center hole). The silver shiny inkjet printables give a very unique cover.

When my stash is used up, I will get the Taiyo Yuden Full hub shiny inkjet printable and the Full hub glossy from verbatim and ty water shields. Those should yield very high quality labels. They are pricey, but I don't use a whole lot of them. Got to get these from the web.The plus format costs more as apposed to the dash,so that's the only time I buy dash format.

Time to dry? Only minutes, but directions says to wait 24 hrs before playing. I've played them an hour or so. There's a few people that had issues with their ink not drying. Probably an ink or disc problem. I haven't encountered any issues, even with cheap/generic ink.

How much time? Only takes a couple mins at max. I do have issues when my printer sat idle for a while. It'll error out when the template starts to go in,then ejects it. I just have to abort, reset printer and 2nd time works like a charm. My printer has been through hell and back.

You can even print on the mini discs as well, with a special template.

The money I saved on ink , more than payed for the printer.

I got my r260 as a in store model at Circu1t C1ty for 40$, got lucky cam with ink, I will try to generic inks, epson is ridiculous with their ink prices.

At work I have a 900 series that prints on discs and it is better than my r260. My 260 seems to have a problem centering the image completely. Granted it is only off by a little but I am picky about this.

Should be able to adj that. Open up epson print cd,click on the green disc icon(lower left)-which is your Adj Print Position. Then move it gradually. If off center by too far right, adj it to the left a hair.

.1 and .2 of a mm is quite a bit of adjustment on her.

Yeah Lil's green dancin' Booger buddy !!! I am a sharpie Man !!! Though I concede that The Printable Disc images I've seen here @ afterdawn .com are Really good looking ! And Being as I A. Already have a Good Epson Cx-7800 and a Load of Generic Cartridges for it !. I 'll Probably stay with It till it Craps Out ! & B.MY wife needs to occasionally make copies for her Job & I occasinally want to scan or copy something , Documents Photo's ect... So I would probably Go with The 580 which is kinda like what I have now but with the ability to print Cd's like the R-series ! I know that this model takes diffrent cartridges than the 200/300 models which means it'll be a little more expensive But I don't Have enough room for a Scannner & separate printer ! C. I Plan to go with a CIS = Continous Ink System - {OUTBOARD Tanks ) so that should cut my cost a little as well ! & D. It's still a Moot Point till The Cx-7800 Dies !!! But By then maybe they'll have an even cooler/better model ? anyway Just thought I'd Weigh in on the issue !!!!!! Damn! Broke the scale again !!!!! Ciao!
