Can SOMEbody explain to me why there is such a problem with this burner?

I first bought one with the accompanied CD (Nero 7 Essentials). Installed everything correctly and was even able to burn some things i wanted (including adding movie chapters and some encoding).

My issue is that when it comes to the LIGHTSCRIBE portion of my DVD burning experience....the various LIGHTSCRIBE software i've downloaded will NOT recognize that there is a driver! NONE of the software recommended for this system recognizes it when it comes to creating labels!
Furthermore when I look under the Device manager it sees the DVD burner as a 1040d...."D?" WHY?....it should be "I".

I'm getting really frustrated because i've already gone through the route of talking to the supposed HP "techs"...and even LIGHTSCRIBE "techs" and there barely seems to be enough tech support to even understand what my problem is....i don't know. Is this so new a product that they haven't run into enough troubleshooting issues?..

I sent the one i bought back to the distributer and just today (8/25/07) got a new one (supposedly) and it's got the SAME issues..Lightscribe is NOT recognizing my drive even though my system does. Anyone got a this bug licked out there?...Anyone?....Anyone?...Bueller?...Anyone?

p.s. What's the difference between the 1040i and 1040d?

I had the same problem with my burner when I first bought and installed mine. But it's an external burner...... it has both fire wire and USB and the fire wire didn't work with LightScribe. Nero and other software like SureThing wouldn't recognize my drive as LightScribe. I used the USB connnection and then everything worked! LightScribe seemed to work when using a USB connection instead of a firewire connection. If you have an external hard drive with USB and Firewire..... then use the USB.... it worked for me. If your drive is an internal then try setting up your drive differently, like switching from slave to master or visa versa and see if that work! Your HP is a LightScribe drive.. so it's just a matter of hooking it up to the way it wants to work!

also my first burner was an HP burner....... and if you do a firmware update then your letters change..... I bought the HP 400i and it turned into HP 400d after the firmware update. no biggie.

iHoe,

Thanks for the suggestions. But, when I switched from slave to Master it doesn't even recognize the drive at all through my system so I put it to master and it sees it.

It just seems that LIGHTSCRIBE has an issue for some reason. If you think of anything else it will most appreciated. Until then, i'll look to see if there are other things i can do. It's really ticking me off. SIMPLE LABELER and the LIGHTSCRIBE utilities don't see it and i don't know why.

Thanks.

if you have 2 drives...... and you switch from slave to master..... make sure you switch the other drive out from master to slave..... so there isn't a conflict! hope you did that because you can't have 2 drives as master or 2 drives as slave!

Absolutely, Thanks. Yeah, I made sure there was no conflict there too.
