What format are these movies? Are you copying one of your DVD's? Or is this in a format liek .avi or .mpeg which are commonly used on downloaded movies?

if you want to make backups of your OWN dvds, use dvd cloner and "anydvd" or if they are quite old dvds just use dvd decrypter, easy free software,. use the search bar on this site to look for dvd decryper guide

It would be a whole lot easier to help you if you answered all my questions. When you say my DVD's, are you referring to home movies? Or your store bought movies? Answer these and I can help you, don't answer it and I will have to leave this thread. I don't have time to waste if you will not answers my simple questions.

Alright for the store bought DVD's you can rip them with DVDFab Decrypter a excellent freeware decrypter that can rip any movie currently on the market. It has the ability to rip the whole movie or just the main movie. So here is a guide on how to copy DVDs (Movie Only) with DVD Shrink and burn them to dvd. If you don't have Nero installed then we will use ImgBurn to burn the DVD. So if you don't have Nero let me know and I will help you get ImgBurn and also help you setup DVDShrink to burn the movie using Imgburn. Also if you want to copy a entire DVD to one blank DVD then follow this guide. So when ripping depending on whether you want to copy the whole movie or just the main movie will change which guide you follow and what ripping mode you select with DVDFab Decrypter. Also for your downloaded movies, so I know what format they are in download and run a program called GSpot and tell me what video format it says the movie(s) are in. (avi, mpeg, etc.)

Yes a 1.7Ghz computer would slow things down. To try and speed things up do not do anything while doing the shrinking/burning process and try and disable any programs running on your PC while doing this. (programs like antivirus could really slow you down)

To burn your movies use verbatim 16X plus blank media. Thats the best media available but make sure you buy it when it's on sale. Using low quality media will cause your movie to skip or freeze up when you play it back.
The secret of a perfect backup, is to use the best blank dvd's you can find.
Check the dvd media section in this forum, and you will find out how important dvd media quality is.

Made in Japan Sony's are high quality media also. Most, if not all blank media made in Japan will be fine to use. Verbatim are made in Taiwan, but are considered top of the class, along with Taiyo Yuden's.

just read the thread and that is a lot to take in for a complete computer dummy. there are soooo many different programs recommended to backup dvds. i downloaded nero yesterday which took forever and downloaded something else(which is probably useless for what i am trying to do) but i will reread the thread again and give it a try. i will probably have some questions cause i have no idea what i am doing but the above seems to be explained fairly well. thanks for the info!

thank you very much c1c. that was very helpful. there were so many programs listed above i had no idea what to do. once i went to the guide it walked me thru step by step and it could not of been any easier. thanks again and thanks to the admin and mods that make this forum happen. lots of good info here...

another question for the experts out there. how good are fujifilm blank dvds? i bought a 25 pack about 5-6 years ago when they were more than $2 a disk and just now using them. now i see them on sale for about 20cents a disk. what is a good sale price on the verbatim 16X blank media? is the quality that much better? is the price that much higher? thanks for any feedback on that...

as for the price, it depends on where you live. In Canada you can find a 100 spindle of Verb's on sale for $19.99 from time to time. Regularly you can find them for about $32.99 on sale for the same pack. In my opinion, yes the quality is that much better.
