This is the error that shows when i start up my computer. What happened was i got this e machine computer from my boss, and it was missing a hard drive and a disk drive. I got the disk drive from my old computer, and it worked fine, and then i just got a new hard drive. I put it in today, and i started up my computer, yay! But soon after the big E was shown for e machine, it said the error. DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. I put in my Windows XP disk and pressed enter; nothing happened! Why? what should i do? I'm very new at this, so please describe it carefully. thanks!

You just put in a new hard drive and a disk drive. I assume the hard drive is completely empty.

The first thing you should do is go into the system setup (BIOS usually they tell you what button to push when you see the e screen if they don't you'll have to find out online or ask someone who might know)and make sure that the hard drive is recognized. I had the same problem the last time I put in a new hard drive it turned out that the hard drive wasn't being registered by the system because there wasn't any jumper settings.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it

hey Q try this site for some basics on installing a hard drive. You can also check out this site for some more info. DO a little reading it's not as hard as you think to install your drive. Remember a search engine can be your best friend. If ya still have questions we are here to help, we were all there at one time!

Oops forgot the rest. basically your drive has nothing on it. if you put your OS cd in the cd drive and boot from that drive it will start your installation of your OS. you can check your bios simply by hitting your f8 key when the computer starts. most times the first screen should be show you your hard drives that have been detected. if it shows less than the size you have installed read the sites i posted for ya. next reboot look for another function key to be shown on startup it should say something to the effect of boot options. if not come back here for more detail on how to set your bios up to boot from the cdrom drive. I have to run so post up let us know if you got the bad boy running.

Remember no matter how much you know someone else knows more than you do!

If you can post the motherboard model, appropriate step by step instructions can be given. But usually on an emachines computer when turning on, you would usually tap the "del" or "f2" button until you get a blue screen.

From then on you need to find the boot option and then set your cd drive to boot priority 1 . once done press "f10" to save setting.

Now when inserting the xp disk it should now boot from it and allow to install the operating system.
