Here is a good problem, I go through about 2 burners a year, don't matter what brands, I have used lite-on and Philips. The problem is I burn dvd's and cd's but within 3 or 4 months they no longer read blank or burn dvd's. I don't burn that many maybe 3 a month (dvd's). The thing is they keep burning cd's but not dvd's. This happens with both windows xp and vista. system specs below. Right now I am using maxell dvd's (single layer), but it doesn't matter the brand I have used verbaitum, memorex.

amd 4800x2 (939)
biostar 6100-939 mother board
2GB corasir ddr 3200 ram
Hitachi 300GB sata II
IBM 60GB IDE
Philips spd2413p dvd
antic 500watt PS
Connect 3d ATI 1900xt
Western Digital 300gb sata USB hard drive
using Nero 7.10
Window Vista Home Premium

Perhaps it's from where the DVD's are from? If you don't have software to make the disc or files region free, then your optical drive may compensate for this apparent error. You have 4/5 changes before the drive is locked.

I've got two changes left as you can see, but after getting AnyDVD i won't have to worry any longer. I honestly can't recall the circumstances that chewed up my options, but can be certain that it was before i got AnyDVD.

As for DVD media quality, keep with Verbatim and Taiyo yuden. Give the other brands the flick if funds allow.

Have you checked your devise manager to see if the drive is locked or not?

Plextor i've been told, are the rolls royce of optical drives. If the pennys allow then go for it.

the PX-760A isn't being made anymore so you will have a hard time finding one

the new Plextor drives PX-800A and the PX-810SA are the only drives Plextor have now. BUT they are re-badged Pioneer drives with NEC chipsets.

So you might as well buy an Pioneer drive or Lite-On both are the best on the market now also I've heard the Samsung are good drives/burners

Buying plextor is like buying prada or any other big name...still made in a sweat shop...they just make more profit margin...also like buying from an infomercial where the hasbeen sponsor makes alot of money selling the same thing......illusion.....or delusion....take your pick? SAMSUNG is quiet and relaible....

Sometimes, this will help your problem, and sometimes it doesn't. It won't hurt to try..........
Go into your Device Manager, and find your drive. Right click on it, and choose "Uninstall". After it uninstalls, reboot, and let Windows detect new hardware, and install new a driver for you.
Have you tried updating the firmware?
