Hey all,

I'm new, and have a question. Well a wide range of a question anyway.

I want to have an HTPC setup with my HDTV and use it as storage for movies, pictures, and home videos. Or basically put my whole DVD collection onto the HTPC. Also I want to use it instead of a Tivo or DVR for HD and regular TV .

It needs to be able to setup to a home theatre surround system, along with having the remote on the media center.

I would also use it as a gaming console, and to share music with the rest of the house's computers via wireless g/n.

Would the apple tv do that, or does the HTPC have a wider range of use?

What kind of setup would I need?

Thanks to anyone for the help.

This is the only problem you are going to have. Depends on how you receive your HD signal, but in most cases you will need a HD DVR instead of a PC. You can record OTA HD signals with the PC, but not much else.

This is what I have Done. I Think it is the same that you are looking for.
First I Download most of my shows and a few dvds. The rest I get from the video store. anyways the shows I get are in hdtv avi. I use media player classic and xvid coedec.

I got a 500 gig hard drive that I partitioned in two. One fifty and one 400. the 50 gig for my os and programs and 400 gig for storage.
(I lost 45 gig in the windows convertition)

The secret as one guy said is your video card. I have a ATI 9200 256k
Kinda outdated but it does the job.
Whatever you choose make sure it has a svideo are a DVI output. I am using svideo. I think DvI is better but I am happy with svideo.
my projector is a sharp something .(I forget)I am not at home posting this. it is a 150 wat. I had to get dark curtions to darkin the room.
but alot better.

The thing you want to rememer about projectors is they are a on going expense. A 400 wat bulb really sucks the power.
and bulbs last about 1000 hours. and are 400 to replace.
