just bought DOW dark crusade

I've just bought DOW dark crusade. when i start on the map i start out fine but to conquer a province with a strength of 10 is impossible. when i enter a province this strong i get rushed by the enemy before i can even make my first unit. if some one knows of any tips please tell me.
