My motherboard is an Asus A8N SLI

I've never used 'Line In' before and I try to use it today, it doesn't seem to work, and I suddenly realise I know nothing about it - don't know what to expect from it.

I'm trying to input from 'Line Out' on an ancient CASIOTONE 701 keyboard.

I'm using SoundForge with its sound level meter there for monitoring recording levels before you record.

I can't get any reaction from soundforge at all. Nor from Sound Recorder when I try it.

They both work fine for microphone input.

I hope there's nothing wrong with my connections. It is a mono plug out from the Computer for a metre and then there's an extension cord to reach the keyboard, 5 metres long. That extension cord is wired for stereo. At the keyboard end of it there's an adaptor plug because the keyboard needs the big RCA plug. That adaptor is mono again.

Its my belief that should make no difference - the physical makeup of mono being that it simply covers both contacts of a stereo plug, but I just thought I should mention it.

So maybe one needs to configure Sound Recorder and Sound Forge when the input is from 'line in'?

Or does it need 'switching on' in the BIOS or something equally weird?

What's it meant for, anyway? Just an alternative to mike input? That's what I've assumed.

Anyone got any guidance for me on this?

regards,

ab :)

You have to make sure the on the record options, in the sound card setup, that the line in is checked.

Indeed, but also check that your two mono adapters are the same way round. If one mono uses the right channel, and the other the left, the signal can't pass all the way along the cable!
