wait, but it detects the old hard drive in my xbox, but when I try the new one, it won't detect it, it says pleae shutdown, disconect and reboot. what do I do? should I format the new harddrive with my computer first, then try? it's 160gb.

try the chimp method. IT WORKS GREAT. unless you have a 1.6 xbox. then it becomes harder.

ok, now, I have another xbox with a service error of 7. I take it the HDD is dead. How do I switch the old one out and install a new one?

Ahh, you'll need the eeprom!
You can sadly only get that via an eeprom reader or modchip!

ok, as for the new hard drive I am installing. I am trying to install my WD 160GB HDD using the chimp method. When I do the clone, it kepps saying all down the scrre, this:
hdb: no DRQ after issuing WRITE_EXT
what does that mean? does it mean it's copying the files?
Also, it is saying that it is locked, how do I unlock it? I tried using chimp, but it didn't work.

I don't trust Chimp! I much prefer the good old fashioned eeprom way!
Chimp has no recovery process should things go wrong!

A guy I know is making me an eeprom reader, so I should be able to fix the other one. Now, when I buy a hard drive, say it's used, I should buy it unlocked, right? otherwise it's no good? and where is a good place/site to buy hdd's for the xbox, like large ones?

I just buy standard PC HDD from my local PC shop!
Cheap as anything now. Real easy to setup if you have the eeprom reader!
