i had a athlon 64 3000+ and wanted something more powerful and looked into getting dual core. I checked which cpu my motherboard can take and went for a athlon 64 3800 x2. Got it today and booted up fine. But when it tried loading xp, after the loading startup screen it reboots. It keeps doing this if i leave it running. So i thought i'll format hard drive and install xp. But when i got to the first screen when the cd files have loaded, i press enter and get big columns on the screen and this keeps happening on every attempt. i have also tried installing vista but after the loading cd files it restarts.
i thought that i might need to update the bios for dual core processors, when i downloaded it on my other computer and ran the file, it said that it was corrupt and asked me to source another file of it. But i got it from the hp website!! so it should of worked.
My pc-
Hp Pavilion A1000 Motherboard ms-7184
Athlon 64 x2 3800
2 x 256mb ram sticks
100gb hard drive
PSU- 300w
I'm stuck here, would really appreciate some help. Thankyou soo Much!
yes i renewed the paste with some more advanced stuff.
i've got it working now, i had put the 2 sticks in different slots i.e. slot 1 and 4 . so i couldnt use dual channel which is weird.
i bought 2more sticks of ram a 512mb and a 256mb , and i tried all 4 sticks together and it worked. why how come? they arnt faulty sticks or slots so why is it being a pain in the back side?
