OK, so I added subtitles to a movie that I downloaded using VirtualDub.. only problem is that I've just noticed that most of the subtitles are wrong (the sentences are different than the actual dialog) so I was wondering if there's any way I can remove them so that I can just correct the .srt file .... also, I thought of just adding the subtitles again, thinking that it will overwrite the previous ones but that's not happening (since I need to reduce the size too, the subtitles I'm adding are appearing together with the previous subtitles )

Any help would be appreciated..

Thanks.

You loaded an avi into VirtualDub, activated a subtitle filter, and saved an avi which has subtitles. Is that right?

Yes, exactly...

I opened the avi video in VirtualDub, I put in this subtitler.vdf filter and added the subtitles (in .ssa format, of course) ...

Now I need to remove them.. so.... how do I do it?

You cannot remove them. They are there forever. They are "embedded", which means that Virtualdub reads the input video, reads the subtitle file, and creates a new video in which the subtitle text is added to the frames of the output video.

If you did not keep the original un-subtitled video file, you are screwed. You will have to download the movie again.

Yep, you said it.. I'm screwed... :(

Ok... so is there any other way that I can add subtitles to an avi without actually "embedding" them so that later I can remove them later if I want to?

P.S. I think I just figured out why the subtitles used to show while playing even though I had selected the "Hide Subtitles" option in the player... :P

On a PC, there are software players that can use srt, ssa etc subtitle files so there is no need to embed the subs in the movie. So many I won't list them. Zoom Player is one. VLC Media Player is another.

There are DVD players that can use srt files along with avi movies including the Philips DVP 5960 which is $36 at Circuit City.

1. That product "removes" subtitles in a really crappy way by blurring them out. Just like logo removal by blurring. There is no magic way to put back the parts of the frames that were there before the subtitles were embedded.

2. You should read the dates on the posts. The thread died out 3 months ago!
