Problem Telneting with Chimp Method 1.6

ok, ive got it setup. i type in telnet and the ip address. i am promted with a password. (Funny how im promted with the password before the username). online it says that the username is root, and the password is xbox. i type in the password and it asks me for the password again, like the one i entered was wrong. after 4 tries, it boots me from telnet. i have tried switching the username and password, but it doesnt matter. also, in the tutorial, http://www.xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-255.html ,it said that i shouldnt be able to see myself type the password, but i can. wierd. anyways i need a solution other than trying to use a boot disc, (many reasons behind this) to upgrade a 1.6 hard drive. help is greatly appreciated.
