Panasonic DMR-E80H -- DVD Drive Replacement

I'm looking to replace the DVD drive, it can no longer read blank DVD's or even Hollywood released DVD's.

I have the newest firmware update installed on the unit.

The Panasonic parts web site lists this part for $367.01
VXY1772-S RAM DRIVE UNIT 367.01

Does anyone have info on an alternative drive that will work in this unit or at least a less costly solution?

It might be helpful to start at the last page and work your way back. There have been discussions of replacing the HDD (the E85H is similar to the E80H), but not the DVD drive, from what I can remember. Perhaps someone who has posted to that thread can help. I don't think that there would be a less costly option, since the DVD drives in these units tend to be pretty model-specific. Are you sure it's the DVD drive and not a controller board that has failed? Have you tried opening the unit (presuming it is long past warranty) and cleaning the DVD optics? Hope this helps.
