Will putting more stuff on the HDD actually make the computer slower?

My dad always made me think that the more things my HDD has on it, the slower it's gonna work. But i think it really all dependes on the processor ><

the more crap on your hard drive the more crap your reader has to thumb through to find what it wants when its doing something, also the less free space it has the smaller you can make your virtual memory so it wil go slower because of that too. you can fill your hdd to about 75% before it really makes much of a diference. you really shouldnt fill it more than that anyway, xp needs at least 15% of the hhd free to defrag itself.

OmriSama, how big is your hd & how much space do you have left? what is the speed of your cpu? how much ram do you have & what is available in task manager?

My HD is 400 gig big. 50% left. CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 2.33GHz.
2 RAM

Its fine to have some things on your HDD, maybe 315GB full of 400, but then you're cutting it close. My dad says the same thing, but if you defrag say, once every 2 weeks, then you'll be fine.

The computer itself will not really get slower. Accessing the drive will be slower if you don't defragment the drive often. Transfer speeds to and from the drive will be affected both by fragmentation and by usage. For example, a clean drive may get a max write of 72MB/s. When it's 3/4 full, you may only get 40MB/s or so. If it's heavily fragmented, you may only get 6 or 7MB/s.
