Connecting a laptop to TV using VGA

Hi all, new TV forces me to try out new things. I have connected my laptop to a plasma tv via a VGA cable, all works fine except that I only get a blank screen where the video should be, the rest of the desktop shows fine..even the very relaxing fishtank screensaver. I cant find the answer in any settings on either the laptop or tv, tried most if not all (but no reboot)...pls help

Graphics card = NVIDIA GeForce FX5600, 128bMb
