DVR connections to stereo and HDTV

I have a Motorola 6412 DVR/cable box that I hooked up to my home theater system and a 60" Sony HDTV. I hooked it up to the TV through the component input plugs but am having trouble hooking the audio up properly. Right now I have the audio connected to the vcr jacks on the stereo receiver. I also have a HD Satellite receiver hooked up through the component jacks on the tv and the audio output from the satellite hooked up directly to the tv. I have a progressive scan DVD player with a component cable hookup to the tv and a digital optical cable for the audio to the stereo receiver. When I change from the dvr/cable box to my satellite receiver, I hear the sound from the dvr/cable box while on the satellite receiver input.

What am I doing wrong? Should I run audio cables from the dvr/cable box directly to the tv or should I run another digital optical cable from the dvr/cable box to the stereo receiver?
