Ok, so I just bought a Pioneer DVR-K17 to replace my junk Matshita UJ-841S in my Toshiba Tecra A8 laptop.

Took out the Matshita, put the mount rails on the Pioneer. Slid it in, it plugs in fine. Turned on the PC, the drive opens. Windows does not detect the drive.

Tried taking the face plate off of the drive to see if maybe it was getting hung up on it and not making a good connection, however that made no difference.

Strange thing is if I put in a disc I can hear it spin up and spin down like it was reading the disc, but Windows doesn't know its there.

Now normally I would think this was a jumper issue, however I can not for the life of me find any jumpers that I can change on the drive itself. Anyone have any ideas?

My Matshita drive is just about dead, and I just spent $80 on this Pioneer, and I'd really like to make it work. Thanks.

Anybody have any ideas at all BIOS doesn't see the drive and neither does XP. I'm at my wits end here. The drive fits in and plugs in fine, it opens up normally, it spins up and acts as if its reading the disc then spins down. Any ideas as to why its not working? I really need to get this figured out and return it if its not compatible but I dont see why it wouldn't be. Please reply. Thanks.

I also updated my laptops BIOS to the latest version with no difference. Anyone have any ideas or reccomendations as to a replacent drive in a Toshkba Tecra A8 if the Pioneer DVR-K17 won't work for whatever reason?

I'm not entirely sure how I would go about updating the drive firmware if the PC doesn't even know its there. It would fail, wouldn't it? Not to mention that I can't even find a firmware download for the DVR-K17 anywhere.

Do the slimlines have jumpers on them? If so, put the jumper the same as it was on the dead burner.

Did the computer still recognize the Matshita when it was dying?

Life is good!

There aren't any jumpers on either drive anywhere that I can see. I know its not a PC issue because it still sees the Matshita drive it just won't do anything with DVDs anymore
