Okay. I swapped an IDE harddrive for my friend...his was broke, so i swapped the harddrive for a new one for him. I did everything fine, everythings connected.
Now, i start the computer up and instead of it booting up it does this really wierd buzzing/beeping sound. Lasts for about a second and a half then does the same noise again.
Oh and a red light comes on the front of the pc aswell. Maybe this means i fitted something wrong or im just unlucky as hell?
ANy help is appreciated.
P.S im dead if ive screwed it up.
Thanks ireland!![afterdawn legend]

The annoying thing is i know for sure i didnt knock any cables. and what do you mean....completely unplug the harddrive and start it up then?
Oh by the way, after about 5 minutes the noise stops, but my monitor still says "Check signal cable" meaning its not picking anything up.

internal IDE drives have jumpers on the back. you typically have options for cable select, master, and slave. set them right (i'm assuming the master position, for this case).

he's sent me a 3gp file of the hard drive. It sounds unhealthy, I think it's faulty and needs replacement. My only concern is if it fried the motherboard via the IDE. Hopefully not, but if not, why the 'no signal'?

that doesn't mean the board is fried at all; something that works simply needs to be connected to that channel to test it.

Well, all you can do is try a new hard drive and see what happens.

A weird beeping sound usually means that you have memory problem and if you are hearing a buzzing sound then something is not fully connected. Re-seat your memory and if that doesn't work then try a stick in a previously unused slot just to be sure that you didn't crack the previous memory slot.

I've listened to the sound, it's neither. I recognise it, but it definitely means there's something funny going on inside the drive. It's too fast to be beeps, and too tonal to be a buzzing from bad electrical connections.

Hard drives always die in silence so listen again. A beeping sound is almost always related to memory. To hear it just remove your memory and try and boot up.

Perhaps but only if there's something wrong with the chipset, that's no BIOS code I've ever heard.

You don't mean from the one or two systems that you've actually worked on do you?
I realize that I've only had my hands in dozens of computers in the last 6 months or so, but beeps are a pretty common memory test. So anytime one hears beeping when powering on, memory should be a logical baseline.

ok.. ill try to help, make chure the colored cable on the ide cable is closest to the power cable. in other words, power always goes to pin one, depending on the ide cable on either side of the cable there will be one that is a different collor make shur that one is on the same side and the power connector that goes to the hdd.

I beg to differ, i filmed a video on my cell of a hdd squealing like a pig right before it died.
