hi first off im not sure whether this should be in the noobie thread or this thread but ill give it a go.

i was planning on buying a 100 pack of verbatim 16x for 36$ canadian from staples. i was just wondering if im better of going with + or - and whether the quality changes between plus and minus.

Again im sorry if ive posted in the wrong thread but if someone could help me out or give me some advice id really appreciate it.

Thanks

Future shop also have the -r's on for the same price ($29.99). I would personally go for the -r's.

see it here

It's a shame you missed the sale 2 or three weeks ago when they had the 100 spindle on sale for $19.99

IMHO, I would go with "+" format because I've found "+" to be more compatible with more drives and players. And, the "+" format can be booktyped whereas "-" cannot. Generally, you'll pay more for "+" than "-", especially if you buy Taiyo-Yuden (the best brand around). In the B&M stores, "+" & "-" are priced the same. Verbatim is a top-drawer brand and you'll not go wrong. Look around for sales because you can find the Verbs 100 pack for about $25 American . . . not sure of the exchange rate, but I'm guessing about $26 Canadian, so please forgive me. Best of luck to you!

it is not worth it for Canadians to purchase anything in the US anymore unless the price lower. the exchange on $25 is about $0.10 now. Less than a half a cent exchange per dollar.

Booktyping turns a DVD +R disc into a DVD-Rom disc as far as a standalone DVD player is concerned. Newer (as of 3 or 4 years ago) DVD players don't need +r's to be booktyped anymore although I still do it for +R discs. Most DVD players will play a -R disc without problems & they can't be booktyped to DVD-Rom format.

As to + or - R I use -R as thats what I started with. Works great for me however when Office Depot had a Verbatim sale a couple weeks ago I went ahead & took all the +R 100 packs they had on the shelf since I'd heard it was really good stuff.

the reason for booktyping went away long ago. I think you would be hard pressed to find a dvd player less than 5 years old that can't handle either kind of media. As for the price difference, I don't know where you live, but here in Canada there is virtually no difference in price between -/+ r blank media.

moloo- Having used both The DVD+R & DVD-R Verbatims I can say other than the ability of the DVD+R to be booktyped for ultimate compatability ! Both the DVD+R & DVD-R Verbatims are uniformly excellent ! it Comes down to which you rather or which works better with your Burners, dvd recorders or Dvd players ? Many DVD Recoders only will record to DVD+R disc if that's your case then your decision is made already ! Most Modern/recent manufactured DVD Players will play both DVD+R & DVD-R equally well ! You might ocasionally run into compatability problems with older DVD players and DVD+R Media ( Usually players that are from 2 to 5 years ago or more !) This is where Booktyping comes in as it fools the player /recorder or DVD-Rom into believing it's DVD-ROM ( Like store bought DVD Movies or Games are ) this will often solve that problem ! Though with the price of DVD players coming down you might be better served just buying a newer Player ? Food for thought !!!!!!!!!!Good Luck & happy Burning moloo
