I have both devices (M3DSS and G6DSR)
Yes the G6 is the newer device, it has built in fast memory so you don't have to worry about getting a fast memory card (like with the M3/R4) and like the M3 you don't need to patch games, so you just drag them onto the card.
My G6 has replaced my M3 for playing games, I prefer the interface of the G6 and havn't run into any problems running games.
Homebrew is not as simple on the G6 as the M3 becuase for the auto-dldi patch to work on the G6 you have to put the homebrew in the root of the card whereas the M3 can auto-patch homebrew no matter where you put it. This is an issue that could easily be fixed in a future firmware update. Although i havn't tested I would assume you can run homebrew from anywhere on the card if it does not require patching (e.g you have dldi-ed it yourself or it dosn't need it)
Updates are not as regular as the M3/R4, however this is because the G6 has not had to be updated for any game incompatibilites and it has been feature rich from the start, the only main updates were to fix homebrew support on the 16G version of the card, and to improve the skinning support. The G6 team are very good at updating when the need arises though (as shown with their older slot-2 cards)
The most recent example of game issues is the Worms Open Warfare 2 game requiring a ARM7 fix to work on the M3, but it works straight away on the G6, the R4 team have still not released a firmware update for this.
When (or soon after) the M3 Real is released there will also be a new slot-2 expansion available that should work with the G6 to add things such as Rumble and GBA support without patching or homebrew programs (much like the EZFlash V + 3-1 combo).
Bit of a long post but I hope it's given you some useful info.
