question about memorex dvd+r dl discs

I notice through the internet that there are two outside colors for the spindle of memorex dvd+r dl discs. I usually use the reddish color one which works great. Now the other color they have is purple. Both say they are dvd+r dl discs so I dont know what the difference is. Can anyone explain? Thanks!

The thing about memorex and pretty much every DL DVD maker except Verbatim is they don't make their own discs. So you can get anything and you won't know until you check the media code. Here's a listing of different Memorex DL media codes. Also Memorex is notorious for low quality control. That's why there are so many mixed reports on Memorex media.

k i also think i figured out the color difference. It just means that the reddish is for like 2.4x burning and the other is faster like 8x. Thanks for the media code site.

Just a few clarifications. Even Verbatim contracts the manufacturing out to factories they don't own. There are many mixed reports on Memorex media not because of notorious quality control but because of multiple suppliers and the differing disc/drive compatibilities of those suppliers. They use multiple suppliers for two reasons: 1)no single supplier could keep up with the volume demands for their media in North America (not so much in Europe); and 2) multiple suppliers keeps the pressure on pricing. Even Verbatim is starting to play that game with sourcing from CMC Magnetics as well as Moser Baer in New Delhi, India.
The pricing pressure comes more from the retailers than from the actual customers. Some retailers will actually threaten to source their own discs in order to either force their suppliers to drop prices or because they think there is a lot more margin in selling their own brand. (This often backfires since the retailers do not do their own testing, and they often end up paying more for B-grade goods than they would have paid for the best A-grade from brand names.) The retail nastiness force Taiyo Yuden out of the retail market and into Internet distribution because they could not compete on volume or pricing.

Same experience with >> Memorex DVD+R DL.
First set of 3 that I bought from a local retailer turned out to be excellent.
Then I order a load of them, now they burn properly but they are not recognizabe by the players.

memorex DVD+R DL = Ritek which is decent media
have you tryed booktyping them to DVD-ROM also keep your burn speed at 4x max or burn at 2.4x

Sorry But I do not know what is booktyping ? Any pointers on how to do that please ?

1)What's the brand name,model#,and current firmware version of your dvd-rw drive?
2)Can you find the MID codes for the Memorex DL's that work,and the 2nd batch that doesn't work?
Use aabbccdd's dvdidentifier link for that program,it'll give you the answers to both those questions and report back. Dvdidentifier is freeware and a very handy program.
3) What programs are you using for the dvd backup process?
Booktyping: Also called bitsetting. This can be done with certain drives-Benq/NEC/Liteon/LG/Plextor-and only with plus format media of +R/+RW/and +R DL. Some programs can set the booktype like ImgBurn,Dvd decrypter,nero.Some drives need special utilities. Some drives may need hacked firmware-NEC/Pioneer. Some drives may have no bitsetting capability-HP/TSST
Not all dvd burners are alike.
That's why knowing what burner you have will help find out if you have bitsetting capability.
Booktyping is when you alter the beginning of your backups,so it makes it look like you're turning your backups into the most compatable of all formats,Dvd-Rom.You're just changing some 1's and zeros. They're not true dvd-rom format,but it sets it so other dvd drives will think they are playing the dvd-rom format,just like the original store bought dvds are. It's a little trickeration for stand alone players and fools them into playing backups.It helps the compatability issue. When it comes to reading + and - backups,dvd drives can do some screwy things,and the no disc error is the most common when a compatability issue arrises. The no disc error can be any of these messages:
No disc
Dirty Disc
Wrong region
Wrong format
Illegal disc
Those are some of the messages stand alone players show when they don't like a certain format,or even a certain MID coded media.By booktkyping,you'll have a higher stand alone player compatability rate.
