Hi, i'm in a bit of a pickle here, changed one of the monitor/driver/display settings in Windows XP (laptop IBM R31) and my login page onwards is now completely and utterly black!

The setting I changed was in Windows, after I had logged in, I think I right-clicked on the desktop, went into Display Properties > Settings > Advanced, and I think I went into either the adapter or monitor tab as I was trying to see if I could update the driver. The monitor tab didn't give an option to update though, it just said 'Use hardware default setting'

All I can remember was the setting I changed was something to do with a driver/monitor on start-up, and it was set on the option 'system' on a drop list until i changed it to 'automatic'. Really wish I hadn't done this now!

I blindly tried logging in and the start-up sound came up so all is ok underneath but the screen is still black, it's just the screen I guess. The point at which it stalls in safe mode is 'Mup.sys' I think

Can't seem to find anything in BIOS to change it either, any ideas? It's all very vague I know, I'm trying to find it on my current PC but I can't find it :(

Really would appreciate it if anyone has any ideas. Thanks!!!

If you can bring up the safemode menu, try going into 'VGA Mode'. That's usually a cure-all for messed up graphics settings.

I tried VGA and it's still black unfortunately! I don't know what the hell i've done now!

I tried F5 and connecting an external monitor as well. The external monitor works right up to the login page and then goes black again just like the laptop :(

Thanks for the suggestions though x

vga settings are wrong
if you have picture during boot sequence then you have video
try safe mode
possibly you have set the refresh rate too high

Would I be able to check the refresh rate in BIOS? I've tried safe mode and it hangs just after 'mup.sys' driver has loaded, so I can't get into Windows at all that way :( Oh dear.
