OK, so I'm looking to get a new processor. I have to admit though, I'm a total noob when it comes to stuff like this. I've never swapped a processor before and I have no idea what type to get. I do know what kind of processor I do have though and the motherboard type. The motherboard type is Dell Computer Corporation 07W080 A00. This is a Dimension 2350 PC. The processor I currently have is 1.80 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4. I would like to stick with an Intel Pentium 4 as I've never had any problems with the one I have. I would just like to get a faster one. What I'm confused about is what type of processor my motherboard supports. There is LGA 775 and there is Socket 478. Can anyone tell me which one would work best for my computer? I would like to order a new processor from newegg if possible. Also, is a processor easy to install? This will be my first time doing it and I don't want to screw it up. Thanks.

Well since its a 1.8Ghz, then your mobo is most likely a socket 478. The highest you can go is a P4 @ 3.4Ghz (I believe, maybe 3.2)

Swapping a processor is fairly simple. You just need to find out how to take the heatsink off, then there will be a little chip underneith. You need to release it by lifting up a clamp (all mobos are different so this will differ) that will be nec to the processor. Then, just lift it out and place the new one in (make sure you put it in so the pins match) . Also, after that apply thermal paste, and put the HSF back on, and you're done!

Thanks for the reply.
OK, how about these? Is this a good processor for me to get and is this arctic silver 5 thermal compound what I need? Where do I apply the thermal paste?

Processor - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116027
Thermal compound - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100007

Also, will my computer automatically recognize my new processor or would I need to change the BIOS?

Both look good. Once you take out your old processor, and put the new one in, you need to apply a thin coat of the AS5 to the top of the processor. Very thin coat, just so you cant see right through it to the processor. about fingernail width.

Can you post your mobo specs, just to make sure it is a 478 mobo.

Also, the computer will recognize it once you put it on, and attach everything. BIOS updates etc arent nessessery.

Is this what you're looking for? I got this info from Belarc Advisor.

I found your PC's specs:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/sy...ecs.htm#1106961

So I'd go with this cpu:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116035
It matches your 400 Mhz FSB and is what the top Demension 2350 came with.

The motherboard supports up to 1 Gb of PC2100(266-MHz)DDR SDRAM
Check if you have 1 gig or not, I found this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820141218

Here is a movie for you to watch:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSFOfAGjql0

Don't forget to add thermal paste, the guy in the movie didn't.

So if I go with that Celeron, will my computer recognize it without making any changes to the BIOS? Will the Celeron work as good as a Pentium 4? What are the differences? That's a pretty good price for a 2.5GHz processor.
Also, I appreciate the tip on more memory, but I already have a gig of RAM. I have 2 512MB memory sticks installed, so memory isn't an issue. Thanks anyway.

Your Intel 845 GL board specifications:

http://developer.intel.com/products/chipsets/845gl/index.htm

According to that, your board supports both P4 and Celeron CPUs at 400Mhz. You want to stay with that speed.

If you can find a 400 Mhz fsb, 2.5 Ghz P4 I'd get that.

The best case scenario would be to swap CPUs, boot up and enjoy the faster PC.
I've done that several times with various Core2 Duo CPUs. Hopefully that's how it would go with your swap.

If I were doing this I would contact Dell and ask them about this.

There is an optional BIOS update for your PC:
http://support.dell.com/support/download...n&catid=&impid=

I don't want to tell you to just go ahead and swap processors. It may not work! If it was my PC, I'd try it though. If it doesn't work you can always put the old one back in. You would be stuck with a processor that's useless to you if that's the case. Could you live with that?

Thanks a lot. I really appreciate the help. I couldn't find any 400 MHz Pentium 4 PCUs on Newegg, so I went ahead and placed an ordered for the Celeron you posted about. I also ordered some of that arctic silver 5 thermal compound as I do not have any and need some. Hopefully all goes well. I should be alright. I watched the video you posted and it looks easy enough, but I'll make sure to apply some thermal paste before I close it up unlike the guy in the video. lol Once again, thanks and I'll be sure to reply back to this posting the results.

Hi DF,
Installing a processor is easy but it is critical that you put it in in the right direction and seated. It's really just a matter of looking at the thing before you put it in and making sure it's not on there crooked. Folks tend to put to much paste on the cpu so I just tell them to follow Arctic Silver's instructions.

BTW,
If you are capable of doing that there is no reason to not build your own PC when the time comes.
An enjoyable thing to do is to do a virtual build at Newegg. Just find a motherboard and get matching RAM and a CPU. Add a video card and a power supply, a hard drive and some DVD drives. Pick out a kick-ass case to hold all the parts. Put it all in the Newegg shopping cart and see how much it costs. You can build a PC with at least double the performance of your Dell for about $600.00 to $700.00.
We've got the PC building thread here and everyone loves to evaluate these parts lists. We can tell you what fits with what and what kind of performance to expect.

Success!
I got my new CPU today and just installed it. I couldn't quite figure out how to get the securing clips off the heat sink at first, but after a few tries, I got it. Everything else was a piece of cake. I didn't realise the tube of thermal paste was so small. lol Oh well, I guess I needed it.

Thanks. Yeah, it's a little bit faster, but nothing major. It'll be good for me for a while until I decide to get a new computer. When I get a new computer, I'll probably take your advice and build it myself so I get exactly what I want.
