My eyes are a bit bad but I think it's a BEFSR41 version 4.1 router. Anyway, there's my problem (I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section, I found other ethernet post here but none that could help)

My dad installed the Linksys on his computer and everything was fine. My stepmother's computer across the house never worked with wireless routers, so this linksys is wired. We spent one weekend running an ethernet cable from the linksys, through the attic, to her computer.

So now both his and her computers worked fine. No problems whatsoever.

Then because he didn't want to do the same with mine, he put my computer next to his in the office. The computers are literally like right next to each other with only the linksys box in between.

We plugged mine into the Ethernet box (so now there were three computers on this one linksys) and everything was fine. For awhile.

Now the lights on the linksys box will disappear (go black even though a cable is still plugged in) tell us we're disconnected, and then automatically return as if nothing was wrong after. Sometimes the linksys' power light will flash and then go black, but again turn itself back on sometime later. None of the cables are being removed. Sometimes when it kicks us off and we get a "computer is not hooked up to the internet message" via windows in the lower righthand corner of our screen, it wont let us back on and it can take hours for it start up the right way.

There's days when we can get on and have no problem for hours and then days where we can't load a webpage without refreshing 20+ times because it'll time out if the box goes out.

Any ideas/suggestions on how to fix this?

It might not be the router; could be your cable modem. If the cable modem goes down, then the router goes down.
I have a 5 year old Toshiba PCX1100U cable modem that works better than the new they sell now. I use a Linksys WRT54GS wireles router that is 2 years old. I have no problem with wired / wireless internet.

PS. You might want to call your service provider, they might have trouble in your area.
