Ok, firstly, you'll need to downgrade to 1.50 to play downloaded games, then install 3.52 M33-4 and you're set to go :)
Yeah you need a custom firmware. I use 3.40 OE-A, but a lot of people like the newer 3.52 M33-4. There are a lot of guides here and around the web to help you downgrade your FW and upgrade to a CFW.
