I tried to create a DVD with Nero Vision express. All I did was add a .wmv file I created with Windows Movie Maker and add some chapters. I tried to play it in my dvd player today and the movie stops every is very bad quality. the .wmv file plays fine on my computer, but the picture is not smooth when played in the dvd player. It stops and starts again every second. Almost like the picture is doing the robot dance to the music. I don't know how else to explain it. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening and how to fix it?

when converting from one format to DVD compliant files so you can burn to disk and play on the TV you will get some drop off of quality.... but remember the source. the old saying, Garbage in, Garbage out, still applies. the .wmv file you converted was lower quality to begin with as compared to digital media (DVD) so when playing on a player and viewing on the TV you will notice the drop in quality. Also, the choppy playing of your DVD is caused by lower quality or non compatible media being used. not all players like burned DVDs..... here is some advice to keep in mind when you get choppy, pixelating, freezing and other problems when viewing your burned DVD:

1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x).
2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual.
3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this:
http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk!
5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.)I use Taiyo Yuden (bought in online stores like: supermediastore.com, rima.com, meritline.com, newegg.com). Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch!
6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better!

follow these little tips of the trade and you'll have better success! good luck.

also read this:

why the +R media is better than the -R media

I hope this helps and here is a must read for Newbies:

Thanks for your help.

Here is some additional information. My DVD player only plays -R. The disk is clean. It is TDK brand I bought a couple of years ago. The file size is about 1.8 gigs.

I tried burning again last night with the source being an avi file, but the results were the same. In my menu I have a 30 sec preview clip showing for each chapter. The video is smooth on the menu. The audio is good throughout the movie.

I'll use your suggestion of slowing down the write speed and try again. I've burned some disks successfully before, but it might have been with Roxio or some other program.

I tried burning at 4x instead of 8x and got the same results. The title and opening clip play smoothly, but after that it is herky jerky.

I tried with Roxio and the video quality was good. Nero has much better menue options though so I'd like to make it work.

Does anyone have any further suggestions?

I got some of the same results of the herky jerky effect on two of my movies. Their movies downloaded off the internet though. I have no trouble backing up my own DVD's. But what can I do or what should I use to fix this problem?

yes, read the post above! Roxio could likley be the culprit here. Do not install Nero and Roxio on the same machine.

Use this to wipe out roxio.

Also is your system properly defragmented at the moment? Seeing as this can effect performance that might help.

Also try saving your output in Win Movie Maker to an AVI instead of WMV if possible.

Perhaps your doing to much multitasking during the burning process. Try leaving the computer idle with no other programs open when burning.

Thats all i can think of for now.
