I am looking to backup the majority of my movies onto Dual layer DVD-R media, so I dont need to shrink anything. I do however want to avoid copying the previews, extras and whatever bad cells that would prevent a successfull reburn. I read through Jaguar's newbie guide, but the whole determining which cells to uncheck really confused me. Is this something I should still be concerned with doing? I have rip it 4 me, the latest DVD decrypter, DVD Fab HDD, IFO edit, Fix VTS and VOB blanker at my disposal. Any help you can offer a newbie to help backup his DVD's before the kids ruin them is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

First thing, I would recommend using DVD+R DL media and booktyping them if your drive supports this feature. Second, if you don't want the menus and special features you can use DVDFab HD Decrypter to rip the movie only, from there you can use Imgburn to burn your VIDEO_TS folder to a blank disc. Just a note, there are alot of movies that don't require compression or a DL disc once the menus and special features are removed, so I would check my output before burning to a DL disc so as not to waste one when it will fit nicely onto a SL disc.

hi locoeng is right
most of the dvd have lot of junk
if u use shrink check the reauthor
most of the dvd will be undere 4.7
in this case iam using single layer disc (eliminates the unwanted audio options-iam using eng5.1 and dts iam eliminates 2 chnnel and other languages)
if the movie is under 4gb iam using dl to put two movie son to dual layers

I just got my Dual layer media today and it is DVD+R so I am good there.
I am not sure what you mean by booktyping. Can you explain that to me? I have a Mad Dog external 7 in 1 16X/8X burner if that helps.
Why do you recommend DVD Fab over rip it 4 me? After I posted this thread, I openend Rip it 4 me and it took me through all the steps of ripping the movie only, cleaning the VOB's etc... all the way through to running shrink it without any problem. From there, I basically quit Rip it and checked the total fizle size which was a little over 5Gb.
I will be sure to use my DL discs wisely cause if I only need to shrink it a little bit, I will do that instead of wasting a disk.
So what about movies that are 2 discs? Can I join them seemlessly to create one movie? How about taking Star wars episode 1 and 2 and putting them onto a single DL disk?
I really do appreciate your patience in answering my noobish questions. Thanks in advance.

Booktyping is a way for writing to your +R media that tricks your stand alone player into thinking it is reading a commercial (store bought) disc/movie.

But first we need to find out just who makes that mad dog drive...some are made by NEC. Open Imgburn and go to Mode->Write and copy and paste the information from the left window here.

R4M and DVDD are no longer supported programs. It is likely they will never see another update and DVDFab HD Decrypter is currently still being developed so eventually you will have to use it or another solution as R4M won't work forever.

You can rip the movie only with DVDFab and cleaning the VOB's isn't always a necessary step. Once ripped you can still open DVD Shrink to check for compliance and size.

I wouldn't recommend trying to put two movies on one SL disc as your quality will suffer tremendously. Putting a "flipper", a disc with parts of a movie on both sides of the disc, onto one is easy though.

This is the burner I have. I have only burned with it like 15 times since I bought it over a year ago, but it has worked well for me. I dont know if it is supports bitsetting, but I will try on my next burn.
I have DVD Fab (free version) and I will give that a try as well. Is it as easy to use as RI4M? Thats fot the tip about shrint it. I didnt know I could use it just for verifying size and compliance.
I would never try to use a SL disc for 2 movies. I want to do it on a DL DVD-9 disc. For example, Lord of the rings is on 2 discs. I would like to get them to fit onto 1. Can I do that seemlessly so ther is no need to select the next part of the movie? Then I would like to take a series of movies such as Star wars Ep 1+2, 3+4, 5+6 and put them onto 3 seperate DL disks. I think that would be easier to do as the 2 movies will be selectable after inserting the disk to the DVD player.

You might be able to join the files using VirtualDubMod and then run through DVD Shrink as a DVD-9 and finally let Imgburn select the layer break for you. Not sure, never tried it.

OK, I ripped the whole disk using DVD Fab, but when I ran imageburn, I couldnt add the folder to burn. I am doing something wrong with imageburn? This is the first time I have ever used it, but it shouldnt be that hard to figure out. I am currently burning the DVD using Nero's image burn feature, but I would like to understand why I could not use the Imageburn program. I think it's becaquse it is looking for an ISO instead of an IFO? What the heck am I supposed to do? Any help is greatly appreciated.

3 DVD-9 coasters later, I keep getting this error / failure could not perform end of disk at once and burn process failed with Nero. I never notice it write a lead in, and during the lead out is when it fails. This is my first attempt at burning +R DVD-9. My drive is supposed to support 8X DL burning but defaults to 2.4X. I have done several -R DVD-5 disks @ 16X with this recorder and Nero. Could it be the media? The brand is Ridata. Now before I get the flaming over the brand, I ordered it before I found this site, it had good ratings + is supposed to be Xbox 360 compatible. It doesnt seem to me like the media would be causing the error I am getting. Thanks for any advice you have.

Make it 4 coasters. I guess with imgburn you have to build the ISO first, so I did that, then tried to burn. While finalizing the disk it failed. Here is the log.

You mention you have an external burner, how is it connected?
Have you managed to burn a DVD sucessfully before??
A friend of mine kept getting IO errors with an external burner when burning DVD's.
He cured it by connecting the drive via firewire.
Seems the USB connection could not keep up the pace of the process and caused the I/O errors.

Also forgot to mention, when you build the iso with imgburn you should have an .mds file aswell.
it is the .mds file that you should burn, not the .iso file.

Yes, I have used it to backup DVD-5 media several times. It is the DVD-9 media I am having issues with. My external drive is connected via USB and I have not had problems burning until now with the DL DVD-9 disks. I was hoping from the log I posted someone might be able to decipher whether it is the drive or the media that is the problem. Thanks in advance.

sorry I'm not an expert with reading logs.
However, if you post your log on the IMGBURN forum the nice people over there will tell you. They are the people that came up with DVD Decrypter and now IMGBURN.
I know the first thing they will tell you is to use Verbatim for dual layer discs ( and they have done many tests of media brands)
