I have two options either a 32" samsung hd with a contrast ratio of 8000:1, 720p/1080i=£450
...or
Lg 37" inch, with a contrast ratio of 1200:1, 720p/1080i=£350
Is contrast ratio really that important, and is 1200:1 a good contrast ratio?

One friend has an LG 37 LCD (zenith branded) and it's picture is as nice as my 40" Sammy LCD-I have another friend with a 42" Panasonic plasma that has a great picture too. I recommend going to a store and looking at the picture of the sets in which you might be interested. If pictures seem about the same, then shop price and features.

Different brands use different methods to measure contrast ratio. So for example, a 1,000:1 CR for Samsung is not the same as a 1,000:1 CR for LG.

Thats a good ratio. I would go with the LG.
Guaging the picture in a high street store is'nt a good idea TBH.
They have poor distributed systems and often the settings are way apart from how you would have them set-up at home.
Read up as much as you can on forums to get actual user reports is the best way to decide.
One thing the shop is useful for is to go and physically see the beast in the flesh and where the rear connections are etc.
Last year I was stuck between a Toshiba and a Panasonic and the specs were pretty much neck and neck. The Toshiba got my vote on looks though.

being close to the holiday season they will probably be back in stock soon plus there are better deals around christmas
the 1080p will be a little better but you will have to sit 3 feet from the set to notice

I have the Samsung 8000 contrast ration, BEST in 32 in ch class, Vizio is OK but in the long run is not on PAR with the same sung.
If you strictly want 32 inch, Get the samsung, and if you plan to go HIGHER, make sure its a 1080 p with 120 HZ techn, it makes a huge diff but the SAMSUNG series of LCD's are second to none, and having a ps3 and 360, I can back it up anyday with my samsung, the Blacks on my Screen are top notch.

Hi Ziggi_83
I had 3 samsung 40" R88 TV's and I had to get my money back (today) from Curry's for various problems. I bought a Sony KDL40W2000 and it is an amazing TV compared to the samsung. I would recommend this one.

Ok, first of all both samsung and lg have several series, so one brand may not be automatically better than another. As far as the contrast ratio, as someone mentioned earlier there is no industry standard for measuring contrast ratio, so do not read too far into it, just comparing the tv's side by side on the same source is the best advice. Also, to compare different tv's of the same manufacturer, the contrast ratio can be a good indicator, keep in mind, however, that there is native contrast ratio and dynamic. So, 1000 native is better than 1000 dynamic, but than again, its almost never that clear cut.
