i have read so much negeative review on the memorex dvd+ r and i was always afraid to try them . but radio shack had a big sale on them and i bought a pack to try . i burned one and did a nero cd /dvd speed quality test and it scored a 93 percent , taiyo yuden was at a 95 percent. these disc are labeled richojpn . i am thinking riteck maybe , does the jpn stand for japan . anyway , i wa wondering if memorex has improved or do they still suck , or does the richojpn work good but stay away from cmc made media . any help appericated .
The reason Memorex aren't suggested is because they use so many different manufacturers...you lucked out with the RicohJpn discs, the next spindle might be CMC Mag, you just don't know what you are buying until it's too late.
There are some people who actually prefer CMC discs to even Verbatim, and they are not in loony bins. CMC Magnetics (the same company and people who manufacture Verbatim DVD+R and DVD-R media) cleaned up their act just before they switched from 8X to 16X rated discs. They did have some factory problems; but their biggest problem was lack of firmware support in drives, not quality as much as some people believe.
Memorex uses CMC, Ritek, Prodisc, and sometimes MBI. I don't think MBI is in the same league as the others in terms of quality, but their firmware support is improving steadily. (There are reports of Verbatim media being made in India these days, and that would have to be MBI.) Memorex uses a number of different suppliers because the demand in North America is higher than any single factory can supply. Another reason is to keep the costs low as the factories bid for the production. This may be a reason why Verbatim is looking to India these days.
Ritek manufactures Ricohjpn discs. Ricoh owns the stampers and specifies the dye and performance parameters. Maxell is now relying on Ritek for its source of optical media other than Blu-ray and HD DVD.
