need some help or advice,i went to install different memory in my computer today,i forgot to unplug the power cord and i just removed the 256mb memory and put in two new 512mb memory sticks.i go to start the computer, and it does 1 of two things over and over again,it either boots up,and sends me to the check disk program,if i do it or cancel it it restarts again,or it will give me option to start normally,or safe mode, but no matter what i do it just restarts right before windows loads.i cannot get into windows no matter what i do,did i screw something up by unplugging the old memory while it still had power going to it? oh and i tried to load the pc with the old memory too it does the same thing.someone please help me!! thanks

also, the system is an older (motherboard, processor, some type of AMD athlon, got it back in 2003) machine, only updates are vewer video card, tons of new fans, and an extra hdd for downloads.

i also forgot to mention,i cant even boot up in safe mode,if i do,it just throws out this list of things about dif. files and something about partition or something.

im not sure what to do,im on the edge about getting whole new motherboard, processor and more memory, but im unsure about installing new os on a new hdd.

First off, use the post edit button if you want to add new information!
As for what you did, was the PC running, or was it just plugged into the mains? If it was turned off but plugged in you shouldn't have done any harm. If you installed the RAM whilst the Pc was running though, anything could have happened. It seems to me like what's happened is that there's either a motherboard fault (which means the PC isn't stable enough to boot windows) or part of your hard drive is corrupted. If the latter, reinstalling windows may work. if the former, it probably won't.

Ok,sorry about that.
The computer was turned off,i just didnt switch off on the back of the power supply,or unplug the power cord, but yea it was off.
I mean, would it be worth it to just buy a new copy of the xp program and try to boot off that,or re-install it?
Most of my stuff is on my new, spare hdd anyways,so if the old one gets erased,it wont really matter.

Try reinstalling windows, but something's definitely gone wrong in the process for this to have happened in the first place.

ok,im going to just go out and buy a new copy of xp tonight, and try to re-install it.
I kind of want to just upgrade the whole thing though, but i have no clue what would be a good motherboard, processor, video card, etc. to get.

If there's one rule I stick to, it's that you don't buy PC parts on ebay. They very well could be. That's where I'd look first, since the other components all obviously worked before this happened, the memory is the only uncertainty.

Seems a lot to go to for a temporary PC, but if you don't have any you can borrow, then I suppose so.

how about, they got these barebone kits?
im looking at this too, would this be ok:
Mach Speed MSNV-939 Socket 939 Barebone Kit - AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ OEM CPU, ATX Mid-Tower Case, 450 Watt Power Supply

or would i end up spending more on this than just buying a already built machine?

barebones typically use lower quality parts than fully built PCs, so be careful of that. Put it this way, you can always sell the PC when it's no longer required.
