Once again, Ahead SW has hosed up their product; this time, Nero 8.
I made the mistake of buying the Nero 8 upgrade and installing it. Once I rebooted, I started getting popup error messages (in Vista Ultimate 32-bit) that "Nero home had stopped working". So, I removed Nero Home using the Nero Setup panel(since I don't use it anyway). Rebooted -- same error popup!!
I then uninstalled Nero 8 from Control Panel. Got error messages during the uninstall about OLE failing. Evidently, the routine uninstall doesn't work!
Rebooted. Same error popup!!
Went to the Nero site, downloaded and ran the General Clean tool. Rebooted -- now, no error popup.
Took so long to do all this, I didn't feel like spending more hours experimenting to determine which set of products does NOT fail upon reboot.
Additionally, when you buy the product, you don't even get the current version. That's right! The link they send you is to v8.1.1.0. To get the REAL current version (8.1.1.0b), you have to click a link in another email and download THAT version. Even then, when you go to install it, the new one STILL says Nero "Demo" -- even though the file itself doesn't include "trial" in the filename.
Not only that, but their email says you have to open the SmartStart tool and go to a licensing panel in order to license your product. That too is wrong, in that if you provide the product key during initial setup, the license key is already installed. But, so is the demo key -- which shows as being already expired! Fortunately, you can remove the demo key through the licensing panel.
Is it just me, or does this "product" get worse with each incarnation? I don't understand why a freshly-installed new product should error out upon reboot! And then, when you uninstall it, it still errors out!
I saw some postings on this forum for a "Lite" version that includes only the media-burning part. Maybe I'll download those and see what happens.
Does anyone from Ahead bother to test this stuff at all before releasing it?? I think I know the answer to that -- no!
More important, does anyone here have a fix for the "Nero home has stopped working" bug?
