I am playing Final Fantasy 3 off my R4, and when I try to save it, the option is not available. I can only quick save - which shuts down the DS when it completes. Is final fantasy a game that only allows you to save at checkpoints? Or is the ROM I am using corrupt?

Yes, you can only save at certain points in the game.
