i dont have an xbox myself so im asking this on behalf of my friend who has an xbox and is wanting it modded in some way to allow him to play backed up games.would he be able to play online

You can only play originals on xbox live without getting banned. If you log on with a backup you will be able to play for a couple of hours then get kicked off permanently, until you reprogram the eeprom chip with a non banned eeprom serial number.

You're talking about the original xbox? The original you will get banned about Xbox 360, there hasn't been any known cases of people getting banned, that I know of, by playing backups.
