If the burner is on an IDE channel, sometimes DMA gets turned off and data transfer slows down.
Usually the burners are on the Secondary Channel.
You can uninstall the channel and reboot to let Windows reinstall their drivers.

To check, right-click on My Computer, select Properties, click on the Hardware tag, click on the Device Manager button, click on the plus sign to the left of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller, right-click on Secondary IDE Channel.
Select 'Properties' 'Advanced Settings' and look to see if DMA is on.

If the burner is in PIO mode, do this:
Right-click on Secondary IDE Channel, click on 'Uninstall'.
Reboot.
After booting Windows will automatically reinstall the IDE channel and the DVD.
Recheck to see if it's DMA.

Check firmware version of the drive and look for update here.

If you use Nero to burn, post a log on the Nero Forum at Afterdawn.

well if all else fails with the amount of data that it takes to burn and process dvd's it may be time to do a couple of other things.

1. have you done a defrag lately

2.have you a virus

3. my favorite : spyware is slowing your pc down

System is working better with new firmware but not up to the performance it used to have. Not sure how to give a burn log.
