Hi, I've hunted in the searchs but can't seem to find an answer to my question of "How good are Ritek 2.4x DVD+R D/L blank media" to back up movies ( I use Imgburn to burn) I would especially like to get a resopnse from JoeRyan as I see he is the media guru here at AD.
I've burned around 50 of the Ritek DVD+R DL discs using a BenQ DW1640, DW1650 and a LiteOn SHW160P6S04C
I've created 2 coasters which were more than likely due to my experimenting more than the actual media itself
They all played on my bedroom Philips, the Philips we have in our entertainment center, and the few we tried in our daughter's Sony played very well, also.
All discs were booktyped to DVD-ROM and all of the players are less than two years old.
Make sure that your DVD writer's firmware is current . . .

The Ritek DVD+R DL 2.4X media are very good, but they have a bit less support than that for Verbatim. In general, support for DVD+R DL 2.4X is improving while DVD-R DL support is weak. However, production is moving to 8X DL media, most of which are using a different method of production known as "inverse stack" which is less expensive because it does not involve throwing out a temporary photo polymer stamper and has better yields because there is less chance of debris getting into the layers. Unfortunately, support for IS discs appears to be less than that for DVD-R DL.
Anyone committed to recording DL discs should start to budget for the next generation of DL drives which ought to offer better support for DVD-R DL and 8X IS discs. (At only $40-50 each, that is not a significant budget amount compared to Kodak's $20,000 CD-R recorders that could do a whopping 6X just 10 years ago!)
Is this applicable to the Verbatim 8x DLs? Are they also IS?

I've also used the Ritek +R DLs and have burned a couple hundred of them. I've burned them on a Benq DW1655, Lite-ons LH-20A1H & LH-20A1s and a Samsung 203B with sucess on all though best burns on the Lite-Ons. I've encountered 2 MIDs, D01s & S04s and prefer the S04s.
I don't know if Verbatim DL DVD+R 8X are inverse stack or not. I'll try to find out from factory contacts. That fact that they have shifted some DL production from Singapore to MBI in New Delhi suggests that they are looking for cost-cutting methods to stay competitive. IS manufacturing should reduce costs for 8X DL enough to compete with Ritek/Ricoh; so the move to MBI may mean that the Verbatim 8X DL remain 2P production.
