I attepted to burn an audio cd which I had borrowed from a friend, without first checking the disc. When I put the cd into the drive, it began making much more noise than usual and would not read the disc at all. When hearing the noise, I quickly ejected the disc and noticed it was fairly scratched (old disc with minor surface scratches) and ever since, the drive will not rcognise any discs at all, cd's or dvd's, including original discs. Is it possible for a scratched disc to ruin the drive? Is there anyway I can fix the problem? Any help would be much appreciated...the drive had been working perfectly until that point, it is now slower when opening the disc tray also, and the cd which I had tried to copy was working fine in my cd player.
I also have another DVD burner in a seperate pc which I am also having problems with, it works perfectly to read and write dvd's but will not recognise any kind of cd...no problems show up in the device manager for either computer/drive.

since the CD was in bad shape it may have thrown the drive into PIO mode it needs to be in DMA mode you can fix that in device manager by uninstalling the drive then reboot and let windows reinstall it or use this guide
