Hey guys got a question I think I might already know the answer to, but I'll as it to be sure.

My PS2 won't play my HP lightscribe dvd+r discs but will play my TY DVD-R fine. Is this a case of booktyping needing to be done here?

I use Nero Vision to burn my AVI to DVD and don't know how to booktype there. However, I am familiar with VSO DivxtoDVD which puts my AVI into a Video_ts folder where I can use Nero Burning Rom to booktype.

Do I need to change the Book Type settings in Nero Burning Rom to DVD-R to get the PS2 to play it?

Am I right and do you have any suggestions at all?

Thanks!

What's the make and model of your burner? If it booktypes for most drive Nero will usually automatically booktype the +R.
It will booktype them to DVD-Rom which is the most compatible format w/ the different players.

My burner is a TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H653L ATA device that came pre-installed in my HP Pavillion and I believe Samsung is the actual manufacturer.

I tried booktyping for my first time last night with ImgBurn and failed. I changed the booktype to DVD-R and it said "success" but after the burn it would only play in my PC but not my home player which usually always plays. I'm sure I did something wrong as I always use Nero but this time I used ImgBurn as I thought it'd be easier. Wrong!

Anyway, I put the DVD back in my PC and pulled up ImgBurn to check the booktype on it. I clicked on Read and it still had the booktype listed as DVD+R despite my changing.

I'm looking at new Philips Upconvert DVD Player with DivX at Wal-Mart for $44.00 that will hopefully eliminate the need to booktype, but I still have a lot of family and friends with older players that I'll need to booktype for if I can ever figure it out!

Will changing the booktype in Nero Burning Rom to "Automatic" fix this? What would you do and what do you see that I'm doing wrong?

Your drive is a toshiba/samsung (TSST). From what I can it doesn't booktype. Here's link on some of the specs from videohelp - link.
If it booktyped you'd see 'bitsetting' listed under 'Connection
Buffer, Bit'

Buying the new player should eliminate the need to booktype. Most players in the past few years support both formats.
So for the ones that don't stick w/ -R media. I'd also stick w/ Taiyo Yuden then the HP media. TY is more compatible then HP since HP uses different manufacturers.

Oh and when you booktype you set it to DVD-Rom not DVD-R.
Even though videoehlp doesn't list this drive as able to booktype try ImgBurn again but set it to DVD-Rom - only +R media can be booktyped.
Nero set at automatic is fine - that's means if you're using +R media and the drive can booktype - Nero will automatically booktype to dvd-rom.

The only reasn I was using HP Media was for lightscribe because I couldn't find TY Lightscribe media and I'm not sure if they even make it yet.

I do have the booktype set to Automatic in Nero Burning Rom but I always use Vision when burning. If I use Nero Vision will the booktype still be in effect even though I don't see an option to change it here? The reason I ask is because the discs I burn in Vision aren't able to play in the PS2 and I wasn't sure if I had to use Burning Rom for the booktype to work.

As always you guys are freakin awesome with your help! Thanks again!

Vision will automatically booktype it too if the drive supports it.

Yeah I don't think TY makes lightscribe media - for printable - just the inkjet ones.

Do the ones burned with Vision play in other players - just not the ps2?
I know my ps2 is very picky w/ media.

Yea, the ones in Visionn play in my regular dvd player but not my PS2

I'm really wondering if the burner I have supports booktyping because like I said the PS2 is the only player having difficulties.

I'm going to get a new player tonight & will probably only purchasE DVD-R from now on. I'm just unsure of which lightscribe media brand to buy.

You agree about DVD-R being the best to buy?

For the PS2 yep get the -R. I have an older one and even some of the booktyped ones it won't load - just gives a disc error or something along those lines.
Newer players support both format so you should be good with the new one even if your drive doesn't booktype.

For good lightscribe media - I guess just Verbatim. Not a big choice out there really for that.
